It’s difficult to wrap your head around what you saw for three quarters. TD, on Wednesday, alluded to this game vs CSU being a “do right” game. He was adamant that it wasn’t a “get right” game and went the distance to explain the difference. He made some great points. Did CCU “do right” tonight?
Coastal moved to 1-1 on the season, 19-4 all time in season openers, and now six home opening wins in a row. Tonight, Coastal also broke the two game win streak CSU had over us harkening back to the Big South days. At times, this game actually looked like an FCS Big South game. Positives to take away would be the tremendous play for the defense. They allowed 55 yards of passing tonight and 98 yards of passing. Coastal’s rushing attack amassed 245 yards. Knicely led the Chants with 92 yards.
In examining the stats from this game, it really appears that the Chants are one player away on offense. Is that player Tad Hudson now? Hudson found the endzone for the only touchdown in the game tonight. Twice he knocked down CSU defenders taking them on head to head. He also finished with a QB rating of 122.2 versus MJ Morris’ 70.8.
Offensively, there were several players who made contributions. Eight different players ran the ball and nine different players caught a pass. The offense produced 384 yards total.
The game was slow and sloppy most of the time. It wasn’t, in my opinion, a clean game. Between both teams there were 18 penalties often coming at an inopportune time for the drive that was going on. I’ll celebrate it when it happens to my opponent mind you, but overall the game was hard to watch most of the time.
Finally, we’ll get into more of this talk on the Sunday Strut but this moment may be the defining moment of the Tim Beck era. Grumblings on social media are hard to ignore. The play of the team in two games has been flat. As our team struggles to find more of it’s identity on offense, the ship needs to hurry and be righted. East Carolina comes to town next week. They will likely bring lots of fans and, having played well against NC State and won this past Saturday, feel rather confident coming to Conway. Obviously, they will have watched film on the first two games. Let’s consider how they will prep for us.
