Admittedly, it has been hard to focus with all that’s gone on the last two days, but here we are. We find ourselves at the sixth milestone game in CCU history. This game took place on November 21st, 2020. Coastal hosted a familiar foe that day in Appalachian State. On that day, Coastal won its first ever game against the school in Boone, 34-23.
Diving into that day, as I was in attendance wearing a mask with my son, we faced that day hoping to make a good showing. App St had been such of a mountain of an opponent that, as good a team that we had, we still were unsure of whether or not we could win. Its amazing to look back on that now. It was the time of COVID. Brooks Stadium was at half capacity but every bit as loud as a packed house. I remember the noise because of an App fan sitting behind me…but that’s not important right now.
The game the week before was cancelled. Troy had COVID issues and CCU lost that game before the App St week. App would strike first on a 1 yard TD run from Cam Peeples after a 13 play, 70 yard drive. Coastal answered when McCall hit Likely on a 75 yard pass for a touchdown, but the PAT failed. At the end of the first, 7-6 App St led. In the second quarter, Massimo Biscardi would connect on a 51 yard field goal followed by an App St field goal. 10-9 Mountaineers. Next ASU, would cap an 84 yard drive with a touchdown. At the half App St leads 17-9.
App St would only manage to kick two more field goals the rest of the game. Coastal outscored App St 25-6 in the second half to win the game 34-23. In the game, there were some outstanding individual performances. Grayson McCall had 12 completions for 200 yards and 2 TDs. Isiah Likely had three catches for 118 yards. CJ Brewer had 14 tackles, three for loss, 1.5 sacks, Silas Kelly had nine tackles, and Alex Spillum had eight tackles. D’Jordan Strong had two interceptions, one for a touchdown. That one for a touchdown put the nail in the coffin as the Mountaineers were going for a fourth down conversion. Strong picks it off and runs it all the way back in the final moments to secure the victory.
This win ranks in our top ten because of the sheer power of the victory. It was the first win over Appalachian State ever. Coastal had barely been competitive in every game until then. It demonstrated a power shift in the conference and Coastal secured its eighth win and continued the climb up the national rankings. Coming into the game, CCU was ranked #15/17 depending on the poll. This win shattered the psychological ceiling that hung over CCU as it related to the Mountaineers and their standard bearer status in the Sun Belt. This win legitimized the program and also the season. 2020 was an odd year for college football and Coastal, and this win, was one of the national highlights. This win led the trajectory moving forward onto where the program is today and propelled the team further into the national spotlight and more milestones that will be counted on in this list.
