Milestone Game #4

Merry Christmas from all of us at The Strut first and foremost. We wish you all the best this Christmas season and hope that you remember the Reason for the Season as well as the joy that Santa can bring!
The next installment in our milestone game list hits at number four. It was loud and it was cold. It was a bleary December 7, 2013 when CCU took the field against a perennial FCS powerhouse, the traditionally tough to beat at home Montana Grizzlies. Coastal entered the game ranked 11 and Montana was #4/5. Even in the cold, the offenses were firing on all cylinders. Diving deep into the stats, Coastal’s offense gained 557 yards to Montana’s 476. Coastal had 276 yards and 202 through the air. Alex Ross was 16 of 21 on the day. The Chants defense picked Montana off once while their passing attack went 24 of 48 for 388 yards.
Individually, Lorenzo Taliaferro had 16 carries for 102 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. Niccolo Mastromatteo had 4 catches for 38 yards with 2 touchdowns and DeMario Bennett was on the receiving end of an 86 yard touchdown pass as well. Quinn Backus had an interception of a Jordan Johnson pass that ended an important drive for the Grizzlies.
Coastal had a 21 – 0 2nd Quarter and led 35-14 at one point. The Chants would go on to win the game 42-35. But, why is this game so important to belong in the top ten; namely at the number four spot? This game allowed the Chanticleer’s young football program to announce that it belonged on the national level in the playoffs and playing with the traditional powers. It showed that the Chants could walk into an intimidating home field and perform on the highest level. The win demonstrated that Coastal was moving from “young” to “legit.” The Chants weren’t just happy to be there. Montana was a cold, hostile environment and the shockwaves that came out of that game set the program on a course for higher expectations. Finally, Coastal began to measure itself against tradition. In other words, this game set the arc for a new tradition of winning and contending. It said, “We’re not done yet.”
