I’ll admit it. I didn’t really feel like typing up a massive Coastal milestone win after attending the South Carolina game this past Saturday. You’ll have to forgive me, but it shouldn’t have gotten in the way of this list of awesome Coastal Carolina football memories. Let’s get back to looking back, shall we?
The seventh game on our list is something a closer to our realm of recollection. We’re going to travel back in time to the year 2023 on a Tuesday October 10th. Coastal traveled to Appalachian State and won for the first time at The Rock. Grayson McCall threw for a career high 373 yards. Coastal out ran App. St. 196 to 111. Sam Pinckney and Jameson Tucker amassed 102 and 100 yards receiving respectively. Coastal came out early and led by as much as 17-3 before App St. came back to eventually tie the game at 17-17 midway through the third quarter. From there, the teams will trade touchdowns and Coastal will prevail with a field goal by Kade Hensley with no time remaining from twenty four yards to seal the win.
Going into that game, Coastal was 2-3 having lost the last two games versus Georgia State and Georgia Southern. The Chants improved to 3-3 and this win kicked off a midseason five game win streak before dropping the game at Army.
For years, App. St. was the mountain Coastal could not climb. They were the standard bearer in FCS and continued to dominate Coastal as they joined the Sun Belt. As TD has said on The Strut many times, “they were nice to us until we beat them!” Kidd Brewer Stadium is one of the toughest places in college football to play. They have never lost their “juice” despite not having the success they want, the stadium is still packed and loud. This win signaled that Coastal isn’t just a team, they can contend and win anywhere in the conference. The win gave CCU national prominence on a national stage with ESPN covering.
Milestone wins change the culture. This win proved that the team moving forward can win in the toughest environment in the conference, do it on a national level, and show the rest of the country that Coastal is a program that will be reckoned with moving forward. Including this win, Coastal has now won five of six against the school in Boone with four in a row.
