At the end of the first quarter, we were tied at 0. The team put up another scoreless frame on the season. Coastal had twenty three yards rushing and thirty nine yards passing in the first quarter.
Meiga will score on a touchdown pass from Tad Hudson from nineteen yards away. Going into the half, the score is 14-7 South Alabama. On CCU drives, all punts except for the touchdown drive. South Alabama’s drives were all punts except for the turnover on downs and two touchdown drives. The half will end with Coastal running out the clock with some decent field position and some time to move down the field. Coastal will end the half with no turnovers.
South Alabama received the kick to begin the second half. Coastal turned the next two drives into touchdowns. 21-14 Chants at the 11:34 mark. The Jaguars’ drives ended with a bad eleven yard punt and then an interception respectively. After the Jaguars tacked on a 37 yard field goal to make the score 21-17, Gillie will give the Chants good field position to begin the drive. That drive would end with a punt. As the third quarter comes to an end, Coastal leads 21-17. South Alabama leads in time of possession by almost ten minutes at this point. The penalties are about even. USA has about seventy more yards of offense on sixteen more plays.
South Alabama is driving to start the fourth quarter. That drive will be stymied by the bend but not break Coastal defense. USA’s 33 yard attempt is no good. Coastal will take over on their own twenty yard line. At the ten minute mark, Ja’Vin Simpkins will run it in from twenty four yards out to make the lead 28-17 in favor of the Chants. The Jaguars cut it to a 28-20 game after a field goal from 47 yards away. This very well could set up the game clinching drive for the Chants. Coastal would punt on that next drive, but will intercept the pass and return it to the USA 27 yard line. Coastal will increase the lead to 31-20 after the forty four yard field goal from Afrookhteh. On the next drive, Davenport pressured from behind will fumble after Noah Arinze knocks it loose and the scoop and score from Tray Brown. Coastal is up 38-20 with 2:32 remaining. As the clock expires, Coastal will walk away with the 38-20 win. Coastal has won three of the last four Sun Belt Conference openers.
In some of the final stats, South Alabama ended up with 420 yards of total offense compared to Coastal’s 294. There were the same number of penalties but USA had far more yardage. As you scroll down the stat line, USA led in nearly every important category but turnovers made all the difference in the CCU win.
