CCU vs East Carolina 9/13/25

From live inside the press room, we’ll be looking at the stats and talk from the game. Coastal enters today’s contest at 1-1 having defeated Charleston Southern in an unimpressive manner, 13-0. East Carolina defeated Campbell last week 56-3. We talked about some of the challenges our team has faced these last two weeks in terms of personnel and the offense. The question this week will be, “Is the game against East Carolina just what the doctor ordered?”
In pregame, the stadium announced Tad Hudson as the starter. It was noticed that MJ Morris took 1st team snaps. During the first CCU drive, ending in a missed field goal, Hudson hit Washington for a 39 yard completion. ECU was stopped on a three and out forcing a punt. ECU will strike first on a 4th and 2 conversion with a touchdown pass from Houser to Smith capping a sixty nine yard drive with 7:26 remaining in the first quarter. With 1:44 left in the first quarter, East Carolina will kick a thirty five yard field goal to extend their lead 10-0. At this point, the Pirates have racked up 145 yards of offense to Coastal’s forty nine. ECU has also possessed the ball for almost ten minutes. Coastal will fumble on the next drive giving ECU the ball in Coastal territory. As we end the first quarter, CCU has shown more of the same. There’s a turnover, inopportune penalties, and an anemic offense. East Carolina’s time of possession sits at almost ten minutes after the first fifteen.
At the outset of the second quarter, ECU has the ball. Coastal will stop East Carolina on a 4th and 1 conversion attempt. Coastal’s best drive of the game so far will end with an interception at the two yard line. East Carolina’s thirteen play fifty seven yard drive ends with a blocked field goal. Coastal will take over first and ten at their own five. Coastal’s defense continued to look strong throughout the second quarter. At the half, East Carolina leads 10-0.
Offensive comparisons see East Carolina with 246 yards of total offense to Coastal’s 148. Houser has passed for 193 yards to Hudson’s 101. Coastal rushed for forty seven yards while East Carolina ran for 53. ECU ran 46 plays to CCU’s 26. So far, this game appears to be the reverse of Charleston Southern in that, while a favorite, ECU has failed to put Coastal away in the first half. Another noteworthy item is that Coastal’s offense looked more alive in the second quarter. The Chanticleer offense managed to have drives of ten and eight plays respectively to end the second quarter. While no points were scored, the Chants managed to complete passes and open up lanes on the outside for runs after the catch.
Starting the second half, Coastal will start their first drive at their own 35. After an impressive throw and catch, which would have put the Chants inside the ECU five, a holding penalty brought the play back. Coastal would end up punting on fourth down. ECU will cap a six play, 45 yard drive with a touchdown to go up 17-0. With 3:47 left in the 3rd, Coastal will intercept the ECU pass. Shane Bruce was on the pick for the Chants. The third quarter will end with ECU driving and up 17-0. The Pirates have amassed 368 yards of total offense to Coastal’s 194. As of right now, through two games and three quarters of a third, the Chants have been outscored 65-20.
East Carolina will score again at the 13:04 mark of the 4th quarter. The Pirates will extend their lead to 24-0. At the 10:47 point in the 4th, Hudson will throw an interception.
At this point of the game, and since about the third quarter, there has been a steady stream of people leaving Brooks Stadium. The ones who stayed are throwing towels, yelling at the field, and punching the air in disgust. This does not set up the Chanticleer football team for a good start in conference play next week. We will be discussing this and more on the Sunday Strut.
