CCU @ UVa game blog 8/30/25

Whether I’m in the stadium or at home watching, my plan is to bring this game blog to you each week. Hopefully, all of them will be written in real time and with real time stats. It could sound disjointed as I may be writing this as thoughts pop into my head. I’ll edit, but I also want to bring you real action and reaction.
As we watch in the first quarter, here are some notes. CCU had three penalties in the first five minutes. Despite holding UVa to no points on their first drive, they capitalize on a long pass to make it 7-0 at the end of the first. It seemed like CCU had too many penalties and UVa had inopportune ones. CCU with two snap infractions in the first quarter as the comedy of errors continued. After a penalty on a field goal attempt, Coastal takes the yards and continues the drive. We fumble and Virginia takes over. UVa can’t adjust to being behind the chains. Coastal has completed one pass for ten yards and rushed for thirteen yards. First impressions is that both teams are leaving a lot of opportunities out there. At times, it has seemed like neither team wants to win. In this first quarter, the defense has given up 52 yards rushing and 63 yards passing. 7-0 UVa
Starting the second quarter, Coastal has the ball 2nd and 9 deep in UVa territory. Great punting again this year for Coastal, and as of right now, it appears our offense as it struggles to find rhythm, is going to need it. However, there was a penalty. UVa forces the re-kick and subsequently blocks the punt. Cavaliers will take over on the CCU 36. Seven plays later, the Wahoos will score another touchdown. 14-0 UVa. As of the second Virginia TD, the Cavaliers have exactly 110 more yards on offense at the 11:32 mark of the 2nd quarter. Sebafundi has had two good punts, one was called back due to penalty then blocked but the next one was 57 yards. After a Virginia penalty on first down, the Wahoos eventually punted thus giving the Chants the ball at the CCU 49. After a 29 yard TD pass, UVa goes up 21-0 with 3:27 left in the first half. With :18 seconds left in the half, Virginia will add on another touchdown making the score 28-0.
In looking at some of the halftime numbers, Virginia amassed 332 yards of total offense to CCU’s 84. Chandler Morris has passed for 239 yards, MJ Morris has 49. UVa leads in penalties with five for 35 yards to CCU’s four for 30. Coastal has 37 rushing yards, UVa has 93. Cam Ross leads all receivers with 103 yards. The Chants also failed to convert a single 3rd down going 0 for 8.
Beginning the second half, Coastal starts with the ball on their own 25. UVa intercepts the first pass of the half and returns it to the CCU one yard line. After a block in the back penalty on the return, UVa will start the drive on their own 46. Eight plays later, the Wahoos will score to capitalize on the turnover to make the score 35-0. Coastal’s first time on the board came after Ja’Vin Simpkins scored on an eight yard run at the 4:26 mark to cap a fourteen play, 79 yard drive. The ensuing kickoff was returned 100 yards for a TD by the Cavaliers. Coastal’s next drive showed movement again, but stalled on a fourth down conversion attempt. The last two CCU drives went for 14 and 8 plays respectively. UVa takes over on the CCU 32 yard line with 1:28 left. The third quarter ends with the score 42-7 UVa.
Starting the fourth quarter, UVa has possession 3rd and 4 on the Coastal 49. After a 15 play drive, the Cavaliers lead 45-7 with 11:13 left in the game. To this point of the game, and with the exception of one play, MJ Morris has taken every snap of today’s game. After a fumbled catch on the punt, UVa took over in CCU territory. UVa converts a forty one yard field goal to increase the lead to 48-7 with 7:03 remaining in the game.
There’s not a lot really left to say that hasn’t been written about or said in the broadcast. The effort was confusing and the outcome was embarrassing to say the least. At the outset of the game, it really felt as if the game could have gone either way. Neither team seemed to have it together nor did it feel like the opponents hadn’t yet gotten past first game jitters. At the end of the day, UVa manhandled us in the season debut and third season under Coach Beck. More to come on Sunday Strut 32 which drops tomorrow!

Chants Up!
