Game blog vs Marshall 10/30/25

Conway is the “City of Halloween.” Without using an easy “Dad joke”, let’s hope it isn’t a haunted house for Coastal. New jerseys that glow in the dark, a Halloween themed night, and a fun halftime is in store for those watching and in attendance.
The game will being inauspiciously for Coastal. A pick six by Marshall puts the Thundering Herd up 7-0 but the Chants will mount an impressive drive of eight plays covering fifty six yards capped off with a field goal. Marshall will answer with a field goal of their own of fifty five yards to make the score 10-3. Carlos Del-Rio Wilson has been putting up some impressive numbers all season and so far in the first quarter he has been as advertised. He has taken on contact on runs and connected on good short passes that turned into long gains. The first quarter will end with the teams having an equal number of eighty yards of offense, but CCU’s two turnovers have made the difference. The quarter ends with Marshall threatening in the Coastal red zone at the Chants’ ten yard line. Collier is 3 for 8 for fifty four yards and one INT. He’s also the leading rusher with six carries for nineteen yards. Marshall won the quarter 10-3.
Opening the second quarter, Marshall will settle for a twenty three yard field goal to increase their lead to 13-3. Malcolm Gillie will return the kickoff up to the forty six yard line. In watching on TV, the steam seems to not have gone out of the team despite having two turnovers and being down ten early. Coastal will drive into the red zone. The second down pass get broken up by the official making it third down. A facemask call against Marshall gives CCU the ball first and goal from the four. Samari Collier will run for the two yard touchdown making it 13-10 after the PAT. The Herd will answer on a four yard touchdown run by Barbee putting Marshall up 20-10. After this last drive, Marshall now has thirteen more offensive yards than the Chants. Coastal answers with a quick strike four play scoring drive after a fifty nine yard run from Dominic Knicely makes it 20-17. The Chants now have thirty more yards of offense than Marshall with 5:33 left in the half. Coastal will force a punt and take over with 2:31 remaining in the half and all three time outs. Coastal will punt and the time will run out on Marshall to move to the half at 20-17. Coastal won the quarter 14-10.
In looking at the first half stats, Coastal leads in total yards 208-182. The Chants have only one penalty but two turnovers. One of which was a pick six by Marshall. Knicely leads all rushers with sixty two yards (on two carries). Del-Rio Wilson has 78 yards passing to Collier’s 76. There have been no touchdown passes. Marshall has held the ball for three more minutes, approximately.
Marshall will open the half with the ball after a touchback. They will take the ball and move down the field to score on a touchdown pass to Tamarez. 27-17 Herd after six plays and seventy five yards. Malcolm Gillie was on the receiving end of a 69 yard touchdown catch and run on third down to bring the score to 27-24. There were no TD passes in the first half and in the first four minutes of the third quarter there have been two. Marshall’s first turnover will come on a backwards pass recovered on Marshall’s seventeen yard line. Collier will find Bryson Graves for a seventeen yard touchdown pass in the end zone two plays later to give Coastal it’s first lead at 31-27. On third down, Marshall’s QB will throw an interception. Coastal will take over on the Marshall twenty eight. An incomplete pass on a trick play and two runs equaling one yard forces the Chants into a field goal situation making the score 34-27. Marshall’s next possession will begin at their own 32 yard line. On the next pass, the ball is tipped and CCU will intercept. This is three consecutive takeaways for CCU in the quarter. The Marshall defense has tightened in the red zone, which is timely for them, as the Chants get three more to increase the lead to 37-27. As Marshall is driving on a run by Del-Rio Wilson, Lunnan will strip the ball for the fourth Marshall turnover. At the end of the third quarter, Chants have score twenty unanswered to lead 37-27 and with the ball. The Thundering Herd turned it over four times, two fumbles and two interceptions. Marshall has 210 rushing yards and Coastal has passed for 162. The biggest story has been the turnovers. During the game, I texted the rest of my colleagues from The Strut telling them we needed two stops to win the game. We got four in the third quarter. It would be nice to turn the turnovers into touchdown, but the Chants have surged ahead heading into the fourth quarter. Coastal won the quarter 20-7.
The fourth quarter will begin with a second down play for the Chants. Coastal will punt into the end zone and Marshall will take over on their own twenty. Marshall will go six and out and punt putting the Chants on their own seven yard line. Just throwing this out. If CCU can kill a lot of time and/or score on this drive, it will be over. That, however, did not happen and CCU is punting from their own 13 with 9:26 remaining. Marshall’s player called for a fair catch, the catch was muffed and recovered by Coastal. First and ten, CCU on Marshall’s 40. Collier will run it in from a yard out after a long 39 yard pass to Eli Aragon. The Chants now lead 44-27. Marshall takes over from their own twenty five. The Herd will punt and the Chants take over on their own five. After a Coastal punt, Marshall will take over with a little over five minutes left. My apologies for the boring writing in the fourth quarter, everyone has decided to run and punt. As I write this, Marshall has the ball on fourth down as the clock ticks down approaching the three minutes mark. Zeke Campbell will come up with the QB sack ending the Marshall drive. Turnover on downs, Chants ball. More running. Clearly, Coastal is killing clock and I feel badly. I suppose I could sum it all up by saying “run, punt, run punt…” Another Coastal punt and Marshall takes over with 2:51 left. I’m going to have to learn brevity on these blogs. Marshall is driving with just over one minute left. They’re in CCU territory at the twenty yard line. The ball will go back to CCU with thirty three seconds left. Coastal will win the quarter 7-0.
Some final numbers from this one. Marshall outgained Coastal 432-410. Coastal had half the number of penalties with four compared to Marshall’s eight. Both teams were 6 for 16 on 3rd down. Collier finished 8 for 20 for 196 yards. Coastal will face Georgia State next week at home.
